With my 3 dogs in tow...I came across this amazing tree stump in our neighborhood. I have never seen it before until today and I just happened to have my camera with me. I just wish I could dig it up and take it to my studio. The texture is incredible. I will def. be experimenting with this for rubbings and wood block prints.

Now that the weather is cold in Texas (it's almost January and the leaves are just falling off of the trees--looks more like fall), I am able to wear them just about every day--slipping them on in the am to walk the dogs and wearing them thru to the evening.

I used to try to find the "perfect" faux snow for Christmas decor. Well, I never did find it--I figured out how to make my own. While cutting a large styrofoam block for a cake base, I noticed how the flakes produced while cutting glistened in the light--just like fresh powder. So, I broke out the cheese grater and went to town--and a couple of bloody knuckles later I had a heaping mound of the best lookin' faux snow I'd ever seen. I used it last year in a grove of pine trees set up in the interior of a client's home. You could not tell that it was not real snow!!! It even has the same heft as wet snow.

...another found inspiration while on a walk-about some time back. Initially, I just loved the shape, look, and feel of this fallen cedar branch. As I looked at the bottom where the branching starts I saw a stag head (profile)--I thought about carving the branch pieces into "antlers". But, then thought that would be too literal. A few weeks pass and while on a camping trip, I came across the spine of a fallen fawn in the woods. Then it hit me...

As we finally welcome fall here in Texas with cooler temps (and I use that term loosely), out comes the wool gear--like this great "camo" inspired afghan made from 2 strands of wool--one solid brown and the other a green/beige blend. And, there is something very soothing about this very classic pattern for a throw. I think everyone's grandma has or had one--although it was probably made from a acrylic material (not very cozy).

I am basically creating generic scenes with a collage of different materials. This batch is made from pages of an old book. There will also be some sewing involved, etc...

Felted Placemats

...just a little bit of wool, a washing machine and a pillow case, and there you have it. Felted placemats. I love the simplicity of the "granny square" pattern--I also love the way it felts. You can still see the general construction of the pattern after the felting process. And, once felted they are more durable and absorbent. Only 9 more to go for my set of 12.

I have stumbled upon some great found material for a piece to be part of my Urban Renewal collection. The product is plastic twine that is used to secure large round hay bails. I am in the process of working the twine into separate sections to be rolled into balls to make it easier to use--to crochet into floral forms and attached to a found piece of masonite peg board (which I still have to "find"). I would love it if the piece of peg board would come from an old appliance, such as a television or large stereo cabinet......more once I get it in the works.

I came accross some "BEFORE" shots of a project we did--and, even though we did not get to do everything we wanted to do to the project because of budget restraints, it was an amazing transformation......

BEFORE:

...mirrored planter box in entry way with water damage--ominous "pink" travertine 30' tall fireplace--white and pink everywhere...

Client wanted to create a separation between the entry and the living area and dining room.

AFTER:

We removed the mirrored planter box and created a walnut "box" to act as a base for the Cascade Coil custom screen that is 25 Feet tall create a visual block from the living area without blocking the beautiful view of the creek that ran behind the house.

Removing the "pink" travertine was not in the budget, so we chose to draw attention away from the tile color with bold walnut shelves and the addition of a custom stainless steel fireplace surround.

These sets have already been felted. I like the idea that you can still see the form of the "granny square", even though the fibers are fused together after felting. These make awesome coasters/trivets. The wool soaks up any moisture and so great for preventing scratching on glass, etc...

The last shuttle launch, Atlantis, 2011. I was not able to see the launch from this vantage point, but Stephen Clark of Spaceflight Now was. And, I must say, it is nice to have friends (and family) in high places--otherwise I would not have these incredible photos of the launch. I was in a Wendy's parking lot far, far away watching in awe. Words cannot describe the experience of watching the shuttle launch, not to mention, the last shuttle to launch. All I can say, is I was a proud American on that day...

I recently came across a cherished item my Dad gave me (it was carefully stored away for safe keeping). In 1953, at Abbeville, La. High, my dad (who lettered in both track and football) was awarded a wool blanket since his jacket could not accommodate any more letters. Beautiful red and gray wool. The "A", of course, is for Abbeville--J.D. is for Jean Duhon, 1953. Way to go Dad....

I decided to construct the pillow covers by hand, because it just seemed the right way to do it--not to mention, I could not figure out how to use the serger. The stitching (chain stitch, of course) was very meditative, and once I got it started, it did not take long at all. Only 6 more to go...

Spent a fantastic and relaxing weekend in East Texas (Athens to be exact). Among some of the Memorial Day happenings was the 80th Annual Fiddler's Reunion that is held each year on the Courthouse lawn. There is a contest among those who fiddle and live bands. It was a really fantastic thing to watch and enjoy. And, it's always nice to be on an old town square surrounded by nice folks just enjoying themselves.

Ever since I was taught by a very dear friend to crochet, I was fascinated by the art of it, and it's place in history as a craft. Before knowing the skill, I thought it was impossible--all of those knots--how is it possible. Well, after a couple of years of practice (and, I still need lots of practice) I am dedicated to passing on the art of crochet to friends and family and learning more myself--even more so after the recent passing of my dear friend. I started creating these pillows in my spare time in memory of my friend and have found it to be very gratifying.

What to do with a 30 foot long wall to add visual interest and connect the entry to the dining area--with a small budget. Grab some steel cable, thin set, and plaster--and go for it.

...we sketched the pattern on the wall and adhered the steel cable onto the pattern. Then, we applied sanded thin set onto the wall, trying to cover the steel cables--only allowing the surface of the cable to be revealed thru the thin set. Then, we applied plaster on top to give a smooth texture to the wall--wash it all with a paint wash and you're done. The pattern was inspired by the dining chairs and the chandelier that came with the loft--lacquered white and re-used.

The opposite wall was covered in un-treated cedar planks to, again, play up the long expanse of the entry and to draw the eye thru the long space. It smelled great and added a much needed softness to the lofty space.

I always have a hard time finding good looking desk props that are clean, simple, and functional. I always run into the problem of only having the "what's in right now" option--well, I don't always want to use orange croc printed leather for a client--So, I have created my own. Problem solved. Oak or walnut footings with parchment or goatskin uppers. Perfection.

One cup for pencils, one tray for all the paperwork most of us never get to, and an ink blotter--you know for doodling and such.

An addition to our armoire series coming soon to Duhon and Richardson, Plaster "antler" handles that will age and wear with time--the base will have an option of being leather wrapped or have a linen box-pleat skirt.

Men's Dresser

If it were up to me--I would have an entire house of dressers and armoires. Who says you have to have everything built-in? You pay all of this money to builders for labor and supplies to create closets and cabinetry, and you can't take them with you. WHO MADE UP THESE RULES?

"Push the cable knits". A great line from a "great" SNL skit oh so many years ago with Adam Sandler, David Spade, and the late, great Chris Farley. (they were dressed like Gap sales girls, and the manager comes out and says......"push the cable knits"). So, here we have a hand-knitted sisal chandelier.

I was amazed while knitting this thing at how soft the sisal "fabric" became.

We have received a great deal of requests for the custom handles we use on our custom armoires, and we have used them as door handles for a restaurant project recently. So, we are now making the handles available for custom order. The handles are sand-cast, solid brass with back plate. The back plate is detachable.
